Once upon a sunny morning, a man who sat at his breakfast looked up from his scrambled eggs to see a white unicorn with a golden horn quietly cropping the roses in the garden.

The man went up to the bedroom where his wife was still asleep and woke her. The man walked slowly downstairs and out into the garden. The unicorn was still there; he was now browsing among the tulips. The unicorn ate it gravely. With a high heart, because there was a unicorn in his garden, the man went upstairs and roused his wife again. He walked over to the door. Then he went back to the garden to watch the unicorn; but the unicorn had gone away.

The man sat down among the roses and went to sleep. As soon as the husband had gone out of the house, the wife got up and dressed as fast as she could. She was very excited and there was a gloat in her eye.

She telephoned the police and she telephoned a psychiatrist; she told them to hurry to her house and bring a straight-jacket. When the police and the psychiatrist arrived, they sat down in chairs and looked at her, with great interest. The psychiatrist looked at the police and the police looked at the psychiatrist. At a solemn signal from the psychiatrist, the police leaped from their chairs and seized the wife.

They had a hard time subduing her, for she put up a terrific struggle, but they finally subdued her. Just as they got her into the straight-jacket, the husband came back into the house. The story is about a man having his breakfast, who saw a unicorn in the garden and proceeds to tell his wife about it as the story progresses in an unusual way. This story appeals to me in many ways namely in the aspects of themes, the plot, characters and the language used. Thus, this essay will be based on the aspects mentioned previously. I would like to begin with the themes and explain why it is appealing to me.

The first is man versus woman. In my view, the man represents the blissful fantasy and the woman represents the harsh reality. At the beginning of the story, the man is having breakfast alone when he sees the unicorn in the garden and immediately reports his unusual discovery to his wife where she responds by saying the unicorn is a mythical beast.

This is rather interesting to me because the mind of the woman is still in reality and man in fantasy. Another theme I found in this short story is deception.

It is possible that while having breakfast, the man suddenly had an idea to get rid of the wife and initiate that plan by making up a story about a unicorn. He probably knew that she will tell on him to the authorities and would try to capture him. However, the wife is also finding an excuse to split from the husband and decides that this is the perfect opportunity and calls the authorities.

Little did she know, that her plan would backfire and the man a victor. It is hard to predict what the man had in mind thus it kept my interest in check. Besides that, the plot also appeals to me.

The exposition is when the man was having his breakfast and the story immediately turns into a conflict when the man sees a unicorn in the garden and hurries to tell his wife about it but his wife does not believe what he says. He returns to the garden but the unicorn was missing which aroused my interest in the story at this point. This turned into the climax when the wife calls the police and psychiatrist to capture her husband and instead her plan backfired.

Up to this point in the story, I find it very humorous. Why would the wife tell on the husband to the police and psychiatrist although it is such a small matter? Now, it is the wife who got caught when she is trying to accuse the husband? Why not just get a divorce? Moving on, the falling action would be when the authorities questioned about the unicorn to the husband and he denies everything that was accused against him from his wife and the situation turned into a resolution when the police and the psychiatrist decided that it is the wife that was looney and took her away and shut her up in an institution and the husband lived happily ever after.

Here, the resolution ended in such a hurry. Without further investigation the authorities decided that it was the wife that was crazy and thus making the story short with a very humorous sort of ending.

Altogether a very amusing plot to me. Next, the characters. First we have a man, known as the husband. He is an independent man because he prepares breakfast for himself.

He is also intelligent and cunning as he can come up with such a scheme to get rid of his wife. He is also a good liar. He lied to the police as if there were no problem and kept his cool, enough to convince the police and psychiatrist that he was normal.

The next character would be the wife. A cold and rude person because she called her husband booby. She is hasty as she acts without thinking. She is also a lazy person because she does not prepare breakfast for her husband and is still in bed. Both characters mentioned are quite typical in men and women however I like the way the author portray them in the story.

The minor characters, the police and the psychiatrist were funny for mistaking the wife to be the looney one instead of the husband which is also interesting to me. Finally, the unicorn in the story is a complete mystery which compels my curiosity in the story. Finally, the literature used in the story. The story itself falls under the fable genre which immediately took my attention because I like fantasy based stories.

I give the author the credit he deserves, for coming up with such a unique story for me to enjoy learn a little more about what life would be like later on.
